About this Nominee
In a time when hunger relief organizations across the nation are being tested like never before, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes (KLF) stands as a model of resilience, compassion, and community impact. Founded in 1982 by a coalition of local churches, KLF has grown to become Michigan’s largest independent food bank, serving over 38,000 unduplicated individuals annually and providing groceries to approximately 850 people every single day.
KLF’s mission, to feed hungry people and engage our community in the fight to end hunger, is carried out through a flexible, barrier-free approach. With more than 95 distribution sites across Kalamazoo County, they ensure fresh, nutritious food reaches children, seniors, working families, and anyone in need—no income verification or identification required. In 2024 alone, they fulfilled 194,170 food orders, with 40% of recipients being children under 18.
Their hunger relief model is diverse and responsive:
• Grocery Pantry Program allows clients to shop for their household’s needs while preserving dignity and choice.
• Mobile Food Initiative and Home Delivery reach those facing transportation or mobility challenges.
• School-based and senior-focused programs target vulnerable populations where they live and learn.
• Partnerships with local agencies extend their reach into hot meal programs and community pantries.
The organization’s commitment to stewardship is equally remarkable—only 9% of donations are used for administrative costs, and just $1 provides three full meals to someone in need.
This year, KLF’s work is even more critical. Nationwide, food banks are grappling with devastating cuts from the USDA, including the loss of local food purchasing programs and the pause of $500 million in TEFAP deliveries—core sources of dairy, protein, and produce. These cuts threaten to reduce supplies at pantries across the country. Yet, KLF has met these challenges head-on, strengthening partnerships, rallying community donors, and ensuring Kalamazoo County residents continue to have access to nutritious food despite the national shortfall.
Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes is not only feeding people—they are safeguarding the health and stability of our community during a period of unprecedented uncertainty. Their leadership, innovation, and unshakable dedication to service exemplify the spirit of the Chamber’s Choice Awards.
